- Actually, John, I don't know how the images are stored. The image scanning is

- Eric, the Online board is strictly a SCSI interface to the CD-ROM drives. All

- Most interesting that I just picked up my first copy of CD-ROM Review this

-
- I am also working with Hypercard/Macs in a rather interesting environment: the

- are writting drivers for the drive. They should be able to give you a good

- Hello Ed ---
-
- I think your original question about approaching a publisher is a good one
- since I'm especially interested in how we're going to get the best print
- resources converted to CDROM as soon as possible.
-
- The few publishers I've talked to are well aware of optical media. The decision
- to release a title, new or old, in this form seems to depend primarily on the
- answers to these questions (and perhaps others):
-
- 1) WHAT IS THE SIZE OF THE MARKET?... by which they mean for this title
- in this medium... (I got one long albeit patient explanation of why
- no matter how large the installed base of drives, the demographics
- of drive owners and their readers were unlikely to coincide!)
-
- 2) WILL SALES IN THIS MEDIUM SUPPLANT PRINT SALES?... I suppose they
- wouldn't mind as much if the margin on discs is better.
-
- 3) HOW MUCH VALUE CAN BE ADDED THROUGH THE CAPABILITIES OF THE MEDIA?
- A good example would be random access, and (as someone else said)
- digital audio.
-
- The answer to your question is to bring them the answers... whether you're
- trying to license the Grove Dictionary to publish on CDROM yourself... or just
- trying to convince them to do so.
-
- I'd be interested in your thoughts on this... as well as your progress if you
- do decide to pitch the publisher with your idea.
-

- Hello Phil... Welcome to the CDROM Forum! I'm surprised you didn't get a disc

- on CDROM technology with Q&A, a big slug of messages from another Forum here on
- CompuServe harnessed to a search engine, a prototype electronic catalog and
- about fifty demo software packages provided by publishers like Microsoft &
- Electronic Arts. I've seen it advertised for $49, which isn't bad for CDROM,
- but free is better yet! I know all this because Discovery Systems (where I
- work) produced and manufactured the disc. If it sounds good to you, check to
- see if the reply card got jammed into your Amdek manual... otherwise, drop me a

- John - If you're going to scan typeset material, the cheapest machine I've
- read about is the Kurzweil Discover, which has it's own processor and memory
- and artificial intelligence based OCR firmware. It is limited by lack of a
- flatbed, however, so bound material must be xeroxed and fed one sheet at a time
- or stacked in a sheet feeder. It is supposed to do 300 dpi graphics too. It
- lists for $10,000 and goes up to about $12,000 for 2mb RAM.
- For $20,000 list you can get the Kurzweil 4000, reliable, fast, with 10mb
- hard disk, dedicated terminal, processor and memory. It is trainable, but does
- not use A.I. like the Discover.
- For $38,000 list you can buy the Palantir Compound Document Processor, which
- reads everything and anything in one pass with no training, and will interface
- to digitizers and ethernet.
- For somewhere between $5,000 and $10,000 you can get a Howtek color scanner,
- which requires the $2,000 Targa 16 video board.
- For 300 dpi graphics and typewritten (as opposed to typeset) material, there
- are scanners in the under $1000 to about $3000 range from companies like
- Datacopy, Dest and Microtek. Flagstaff Engineering, of Flagstaff AZ, claims in
- its ads that they have a software package that will allow these scanners to
- read typeset.
- Keep me posted on your own efforts to learn more in this area.

- Apart from the desirability of multibit depth graphics there are some serious
- problems to consider in the planning of a graphics library for a CD app. First,
- what kind of display or displays will the graphics have to be shown on? If they
- are bitmap, then what might look good on VGA, won't play on CGA or EGA. Do you
- store the same graphics three times for each device? Further, what if you have
- a lot of graphics? We are developing an Electronic Yellow Pages system for the
- Italian Telephone Company. They have 100,000 advertisers. That's 5.5k per logo
- for each advertiser. Not enough for bitmapped graphics. Object oriented
- graphics are better, i.e., terser. They also can be scaled to match the
- requirements of different displays. To support the resulting needs, we
- developed a technology (software) we call BLADE. It takes bitmaps, and converts
- them into Postscript. That means lines and curves. It's an alternative, if (and
- only if) your graphics are not continuous tone imagery. Graphics are a tough
- nut to crack, even in CDROM storage.

- Welcome to the forum, Christopher. "CD ROM The New Papyrus" is a very good
- resource for getting information on CDROM technology. It is published by
- Microsoft Press. CDROM Review is a good, low cost monthly publication on the
- optical publishing industry; CD Data Report is a more expensive periodical, but
- might suit your needs better. High Sierra and ISO/9660 are the two most
- frequently encountered standards. Microsoft, Meridian, TMS, and many drive

- Hello Ron --- Welcome to the CDROM Forum!
- CDROM might be great for your application... or a WORM drive... it depends.
- Both can handle large amounts of data... such as an expert system atop a
- significant database would involve. If your system needs "write" capability,
- that decides the issue at this point in time. If not, it may come down to the
- number of sites that need copies of the identical data. Smaller numbers of
- duplicates may lead you toward WORM while larger numbers of copies will
- mitigate for CDROM. There are folks with personal experience in both media here
- on the Forum. If you are in a position to share some details about the
- application, one or more of them might venture more specific counsel.
- Meanwhile, thanks for joining us!

- We have several software packages on the market which enhance the use of the CD
- drive. They all tie it to your stereo and allow you to play and catalog your
- audio CDs. One program is a pop-up utility that allows you to treat the drive
- as an audio player. Another package is an automatic data base for your audio
- CDs. When you place a disk in the drive, it looks at it and if it doesn't
- recognize it a record is written with the time/track information. You are
- invited to fill in the Artist Name, the album name, the song titles and a
- preferred play sequence. The next time you place that disk in the drive, it
- will automatically retrieve the record and ask you if you want to hear the CD
- in the pre-selected sequence. As far as releasing compact disks, we are working
- on two at present time. I am not at liberty to describe the contents of the
- disks, but I can say that they will have audio and data and will be mastered in
- the new standard. Bob Helfant, CDP

- We have just started and we do not have CDROMs with our own brand. We have,

- Thanks for your message. I have not read your article yet. I will try to find
- your article soon. At the CDROM Conference this year, we could see the
- significant development in DVI Technology since last year and very poor
- presentation techinique of CDI. This is my personal opinion (not my company's)
- but I would see the DVI technology is more realistic than CDI. DVI's only
- disadavantage over CDI was the quality of its video, I think. But since it has
- been developed and advanced, and since the IBM PCAT is everywhere, I do not
- know how CDI will present itself to be an ideal technology for the future. I
- will be spoiled when it can be done.... But as a software producer, I would
- like to see both of them running and competing each other. Now, I would like
- to see CDI people to show us some thing.---- Noboru Toyoshima

- When you introduce new media, you do not have to have everything new... just
- like you pointed out that we can utilize the drive of CDROMs. I have
- experienced in producing a CDROM, called "Wonder Island" which is for NEC CDROM
- drive manufacturing division. In the disc, we have put ADPCM DATA which is the
- Green book technology, so to speak, and CDROM data. CDI is the attempt to
- standardize the CDROM data and technology, maybe, but it does not seem
- practical. There is no memory to write on. You cannot hook disk drive
- externally. If the market of CDI is education or home entertainment such as
- games, it is obvious that you have to save the status or advancement of your
- work or game into something.... which CDI does not have. ---These are based on
- my understandings and maybe wrong. Please post your opinions. Let us
- encourage them and let the market emerge!! ---- Noboru Toyoshima

- Eric, decompression is very fast. The time from typing in a model number to
- seeing the first image is only a few seconds. And that includes fetching the
- images across a LAN from the server.
-
- As far as the compression ratios go, I really don't know as its not my area.
- They say our average image size is about 12K. The 8514/A adapter has 8 bit
- planes of 1024 x 768 pixels. There is one image per bit plane, so the software
- can pre-fetch seven images - the last bit plane is used for Zooming an image.
- Some of the screen area is used to display text, so the image is smaller than
- the screen.

- Brian, DVI stands for Digital Video Interactive, which is digital video

- Hello, Sherwood. With CDROM you could get 650 megs on line to your Compaq 386.
- However, if you need read/write access to your media there are other
- alternatives. There are some large disks (150+ megs) that have device drivers
- permitting volumes larger than 32megs. The IBM PC Software forum might have
- more details on those items. WORM (Write Once Read Many) may also be an option
- - they have capacities exceeding 1 gigabyte. Exactly how you plan to use the
- storage will be a major factor in selecting the media type.

- DVI as the next step in giving information to people. Instead of a "still"

- Well, all it takes is for the right person to get hold of a CD-Rom drive in
- order for a driver to be written. You are right in saying that the
- trackdisk.device won't cut it, but there are nuerous drivers for HDs that could
- be modified easily to handle the CD-Rom drives. The other consideration (right
- now) is the limit on partition sizes, but that will soon be history, giving us

-
- Now... where do I get my hands on a CD-Rom drive (preferably SCSI), with full

- Greetings, I'm a system manager for a research lab at Cornell. I'm interested
- in cdroms as a way of supplying documentation and worms as a way of archiving
- large quantities of data. One of my frustrations with what I've seen of the
- current cdrom technology is that the formats aren't standardized: it appears to
- me that one can't just get a "plain-text" disk that can be used without any
- special software. Am I right? Most of the data-bases seem to need their own
- special software to be read, so one can't just (for example) use MicroSoft
- Bookshelf on any system with a cdrom drive, one also has to get the appropriate
- software with it. -- this would, for example keep it from being used on a VMS
- system that has DEC's cdrom drive attached.

- One thing I was very surprised at the 3rd Int'l conference on CD ROM was there
- were so many developers that gave me samples of their CD ROM's and later I
- found out that it is very inexpensive to press discs in U.S. When you have
- some maufactures to master and press CD ROM discs, roughly speaking, it will
- cost us about 8000 dollars. I does not change much even if we ask 100 or 200
- discs. It may take 2 or 3 weeks to be delivered. There's a express service(I
- think one week or so) but it cost much more. I wonder exactly how much do you
- pay for mastering and pressing discs. Is it cheaper, then, to send MT from
- Japan to U.S. and have them matering and pressing and delivered? By the way, I
- forgot to mention that 8000 dollars refer to the price in Japan ------- Noboru

- The CDs are standardized to the point the any CD will run on any CD drive.
- Some of them (the ones mastered in the High Sierra format) do appear as DOS
- files in a DOS environment, but for most of them, you need whatever retrieval
- software that was written for the package. As far as taking them from one
- operating system to another, can you do that with many software formats? I
- don't have much experience outside of the MS/PC-DOS world, but I'm fairly

- I don't think CD-ROM is the answer to your problems. MS-DOS can receive and
- store more than 32 megs, just not on one disk partition. It should be possible
- to get a large hard disk with partitioning software, so in effect you have many
- 32meg hard disks. Then you will need to write/modify your tp software on the
- compac to create a new file on a new disk after each 32 megs is received.
- CD-ROM is read only, so it won't fix the problem. WORM disks would hold your
- data, but if you transfer it often you'll be buying a lot of cartridges.
- Without all the facts, it seems that the best answer might be to let you're
- 4341's receive the data directly. In any case, good luck with your project.

- Ron, I think it is possible...when computer manufacturers start including a
- SCSI port as standard equipment (like some of them are now doing with serial

- that interface. And I suspect that a few of the drives will become very
- popular, meaning that the software to work with those drives will be written

- reasonable to expect that in the future a few CDROM drives will have a much
